Mad March Hare Footy Open 2020
| The club members of Whitefriars Sailing Club put on a great event, with everyone being most welcoming and friendly, the venue has an island clubhouse with sailing possibilities on three sides, chosen depending upon which way the wind is heading. this means you can almost always be assured of an upwind/downwind course running alongside a bank, with the close proximity of the clubhouse it is almost radio sailing nirvana. …and so to the event it self. Eleven Footy enthusiasts turn up, amongst the old guard we were pleased to welcome the new faces of Richard Farrer, Tom Duggins and Derek Butterworth. Richard from Whitefriers skipper sailing his own built Fat Boy Slim, Tom from Birmingham MYC with a nicely presented Slim complete with an una rig by Graham Tite, and Derek another Whitefriers skipper borrowing Iambus 2. Amongst the boats on the water was a wide range of designs, ICE, Fat Boy, IBEX, Slim, Fat Boy Slim, Breithorn, Iambus 2, and an original 3D printed design Thin Lizzy. John Burgoine had been hard at work developing swing rigs with a number of innovations in the mast, foresail luff attachment etc which he put to good use throughout the day. Peter Shepherd brought Thin Lizzy for it’s second trial and whilst things started promisingly experimentation throughout the day meant his results started to fall off. David Wilkinson sailed his Breithorn a design he had built a while ago to good effect, proving that there is nothing quite like time on the water whatever the class it is you sail. Peter Jackson and Ann Burgoine finished the event level on points with Ann sailing as well as I have seen for sometime. |
